Gunmen kill two officers during attack on police checkpoint in Enugu

Unknown gunmen have attacked a police checkpoint in Enugu state, killing two officers.

According to Sun, the policemen were killed during a shooting incident in a security post mounted by the officers in Nachi in the Oji River Local Government Area of the state.

They were said to have died on the spot while the sound of gunshots caused pandemonium as commuters on the road scampered for safety.

The state police spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, who confirmed the incident, said the command had commenced action to track down the killers of the officers.

He said:  “Full-scale investigation that will lead to fishing out of the assailants has commenced. Further development will be communicated, please.”

The incident is the latest in what appears to be a growing trend of attacks on police stations and security personnel in the South-East region of the country.

Few days ago, unidentified gunmen shot and killed three policemen at a checkpoint in the commercial city of Onitsha in Anambra state.

According to rep, the incident happened in the morning around Ukaegbu/Oraifite Street, Ezeiweka, Awada area of Onitsha.

The latest killing is happening days after President Muhammadu Buhari paid a surprise visit to Imo State, considered to be the hub of IPOB’s operations in the region.

During the visit, President Buhari, in a rare reconciliatory tone, praised the Igbo for their enterprising spirit.
