Gunmen attack Owerri prison, police command, free inmates (PHOTOS)

Gunmen have attacked the federal Correctional Centre and police command headquarters in Owerri, Imo state.

Some inmates in the prison and police cell were said to have been freed by the gunmen.

The federal prison is said to currently house over 1,700 inmates.

The attack was said to have happened in the early hours of Monday.

There was said to have been heavy gunfire during the attack.

The police command and some vehicles parked in the vicinity were set ablaze by the gunmen and one person was reportedly killed.

Eyewitness said the operation which lasted for close to three hours were carried out by gunmen using dynamites, heavy explosives, and AK-47 rifles.

The gunmen were said to have invaded the Owerri Prisons using dynamites and other heavy explosives to gain entrance and released some inmates.

Details of the level of carnage done to the facility and the number of inmates released is yet to be confirmed.

The gunmen also attacked the Police State Headquarters Owerri while firing consistently with AK 47 rifles and explosives, released some suspects detained in the SCID cell and put fire on so many vehicles parked at the Headquarter premises including the SCID office building. 

The operation was said to have lasted for close to three hours.

The police headquarters is located opposite the Imo state government house.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.
