Trump, wife test positive for coronavirus -- a month to US election

United States President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump have tested positive for the coronavirus disease.

This is coming roughly 31 days to the US 2020 presidential election on November 3.

The president confirmed this on Twitter after one of his aide Hope Hicks initially tested positive for the virus.

“Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!”

The president’s physician, Sean P. Conley, wrote later that Trump and his wife “are both well at this time, and they plan to remain at home within the White House during their convalescence.”

The president and first lady were tested after Hicks had tested positive earlier in the day.

Hicks was on board Air Force One with the president as he traveled to Cleveland, Ohio for the first presidential debate with his rival, Democrat Joe Biden, on Tuesday.

The president routinely receives tests for Covid-19, though the exact frequency is not clear.

Trump isn’t the first world leader to contract the coronavirus. Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro announced in July that he’d tested positive. UK prime minister Boris Johnson recovered from COVID-19 in April, and Honduras’ president Juan Orlando Hern√°ndez was discharged from a hospital in July.

Over 200,000 people have died of COVID-19 in the United States.
