Senate reportedly rejects Lauretta Onochie’s nomination as INEC Commissioner


The Senate has reportedly rejected the nomination of Lauretta Onochie as a commissioner of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

President Muhammadu Buhari had on Tuesday sent the name of Onochie alongside others to the upper legislative chamber for confirmation.

Several Nigerians have beei kicking against Onochie’s appointment insisting that she is not qualified to be an election umpire.

Onochie, who is President Buhari's Senior Special Assistant on Social Media, was selected to represent the South-South in INEC.

But according to Yemie fash, the Senate rejected Onochie’s nomination for reasons including her position as a card carrying member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) party and a special aide to the president.


The leadership of the Senate, according to the report, asked the presidency to reconsider Onochie's nomination in a memo to the presidency on Wednesday evening.
