Police open fire as protesters march to Anambra SARS headquarters

Police officers in Anambra state opened fire on youths peacefully protesting against police brutality in Nigeria.

The protesters marched to the headquarters of the now disbanded special anti-robbery squad (SARS) in Awkuzu, Anambra, on Friday.

The protesters were led by celebrities including Chinedu Okoli, better known as Flavour; Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike aka Phyno, Kingsley Okonkwo aka Kcee, and Yul Educhie.

The massive crowd had converged on Awka, the state capital, from where they moved to the disbanded SARS office to demand the shut down of the facility.

The Akwuzu SARS office has been accused of gross misconduct, arbitrary arrests, torture and extra-judicial killings.

Most of the atrocities were said to have been committed during the period when CSP James Nwafor was the SARS commander.

Anambra state governor Willie Obiano had appointed Nwafor as his senior special assistant security after he retired from police.

But while endorsing the #EndSARS protest on Thursday, the governor announced that Nwafor has been sacked and would be prosecuted.

Obiano had promised visit all the SARS offices in the state on Friday and ensure the immediate release of illegal detainees.

A lot of victims has been narrating their torture experience at the Akwuzu detention facility.

A victim detailed how young men, who were arrested and kept in detention, were murdered by the SARS operatives.
