Two killed as Osun governor’s convoy is attacked during #EndSARS protest in Osogbo (VIDEO)


Two persons were killed while several others sustained injuries after violence broke out at #EndSARS protest ground in Osun state on Saturday.

According some online reports, governor of the state, Gboyega Oyetola, was whisked away from the venue after some persons in the crowd hurled stones towards his direction.

Oyetola was addressing the protesters at Olaiya junction in Osogbo, the state capital, when suspected hoodlums, armed with guns and stones, launched an attack.

Two cars in the governor’s convoy were damaged in the process.

Some reports said the governor brought thugs to the protest ground and also accused him killing the protester while trying to escape.

However, in a statement the government described the incident as an attempt on the governor’s life.

“There was an attempt Saturday on the life of the Governor of the State of Osun, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola,” the statement read.

“Armed with guns, cutlasses, the hoodlums swooped on the Governor at Olaiya junction, while he was addressing the #EndSARS protesters at the state capital.

“Governor Oyetola had joined protesters in the walk from Alekuwodo area to Olaiya junction, singing with them and promising them that their demands will be looked into, and that he supported how their peaceful agitations which is a part of democratic process.

“However, while still addressing the youths, the armed men and women started shooting, hurled stones at the Governor’s car.”


Also, Funke Egbemode, commissioner for information Osun state, says the attack on the governor at the protest ground was a premeditated attempt to assassinate him.

Egbemode, who was also at the scene, said the attack was beyond the #EndSARS protest and that the attackers were not protesters.

She expressed sadness that the attackers had infiltrated the peaceful protest to execute their take sinister intentions.

“It was an assassination attempt. This was certainly beyond the #EndSARS protest. The people who launched the attack were not protesters at all,” she said.

“Protests have been going on in the state for some days now, and there had been no attack on any government official since the beginning of the protest.

“However, today’s attack changed the narrative. It was not a spontaneous attempt. The attackers had it all planned. They had guns and other weapons. In fact, it was a woman who smashed the windscreen of the vehicle of the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Wole Oyebamiji where I was.

“It is really sad that these people infiltrated the ranks of the peaceful protesters and took advantage of the governor’s walk with the youths to execute their sinister intentions.

“It was simply a street coup to take out the governor, his deputy and the secretary to the state government, all of whom were exposed during the protest and had to be smuggled into vehicles when the attack was launched.”

There have been protests across Nigeria with demonstrators calling for an end to police brutality and extrajudicial killings.

The youth also are demanding a reform of the police force in general and better welfare for citizens.
