#EndSARS: IGP finally bows to pressure, disbands SARS nationwide

The inspector-general of police, Mohammed Adamu, has announced the immediate disbandment of the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) following nationwide protests over its brutality.

The IGP made the announcement at a press conference on Sunday afternoon in Abuja.

Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, had reportedly thwarted an announcement by the police boss scrapping SARS on Friday.

There have widespread protest against SARS, with the protesters calling for the abolition of the notorious police unit.

According to a report by the Gazette, Adamu had scheduled to announce the scrapping of SARS on Friday, a day after the street protest started.

But Adesina, according to the report, thwarted the move by the telling the presidency that the administration should not surrender to Twitter warriors.

IGP is said to have scheduled the announcement after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the State House.

However, Adesina then proceeded to issue the highly-criticised statement that appeared to cast the presidency as insensitive to the #EndSARS campaign, which has gained worldwide backing over the past week.

On Saturday, a young man, Jimoh Isiaq, was killed in Ogbomoso, Oyo state, after police officers opened fire on protesters. Many others were injured and remained in critical conditions as of Sunday morning.
