Some residents of Kano, Niger and Bauchi states on Thursday took to the streets to join the nationwide protest against police brutality, killings and other forms of bad governance in Nigeria.

The youths under the aegis of Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) made their voices heard with their placards as they match in Kano metropolis.

The protesting youth carried placards with the inscriptions: “Arewa is Bleeding,” “Stop the Killings in the North,” "End Boko Haram, Banditry,"  and “Empower SWAT to Stop Killings, Kidnappings, Rape,”.

The youths also demanded an end to insecurity, poor road infrastructure, and epileptic power supply in the north.

They believe the Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team is in a better position to tackle various forms of security threats such as killings, banditry, kidnapping, rape, and including the terrorist group’ Boko Haram’ in the region if they are fully equipped and trained.

There has been a nationwide protest over the excesses of security operatives which started with the call to abolish the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Following the outrage, Mohammed Adamu, inspector-general of police (IGP), has on Monday dissolve the notorious police unit.

Despite the disbandment of SARS and renaming the unit to Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT), the protests has intensified with Nigerians calling for a far-reaching reforms of all security apparatus.
