Fani-Kayode withdraws the "stupid" word he used on journalist

Femi Fani-Kayode, a chieftain of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), has apologised to Eyo Charles, a Daily Trust journalist whom he attacked at a press conference in Calabar. Cross River state.

Fani-Kayode had, a lawyer and former minister of aviation, had on Tuesday, said he had no apology to offer after a video of him verbally attacking the journalist went viral.

TMZNaija had reported how Fani-Kayode, who has been touring some PDP states, shouted at Charles before ending a briefing in Calabar.

Charles had asked him if his recent trips were being sponsored and the ex-minister lost his cool afterwards.

“I am saying this on live TV. What type of stupid question is that? Bankrolling who? Do you know who you are talking to? I will not take any questions from this man,” Fani-Kayode had said in the video.

However, in a statement shared via his social media platforms on Wednesday, Fani-Kayode said he is withdrawing "stupid" word he used on the journalist.

"I met with my advisors till late last night and I wish to say the following. I hereby withdraw the word "stupid" which I used in my encounter with a journalist in Calabar," he said.

"I have many friends in the media who I offended by losing my cool and using such words. I hereby express my regrets for doing so."

The journalist and his media company had claimed the minister threatened him with his security men.

But Fani-Kayode denied the claims and challenged anyone making such claims to bring proof.

"I do however wish to state categorically that no threat of physical harm was ever made to the journalist in question and neither did I send anyone to threaten him. Anyone that says otherwise is lying and I challenge them to bring the proof.

"I would never seek to physically harm a journalist. For the last 30 years I have defended and worked with journalists and fought for the right of freedom of expression.

:I am also very close to many in that profession. I would be the last to seek to disparage those that are honorable and noble within its ranks.

:I hope that this will assuage the pain and anger of anyone that was hurt or offended by this ugly episode. I have now put this matter behind me and moved on. Now my tour of the South continues. Moving to yet another state today!"
