Super Eagles' Victor Osimhen completes £74m move to Napoli

Super Eagles forward, Victor Osimhen, has joined Italian club, Napoli, on a five-year deal.

The 21-year-old Nigerian international linked up with the Serie A side from Lille, a French Ligue 1 club, for a deal worth £74 million, according to Daily Mail.

Napoli president, Aurelio De Laurentiis, announced Osimhen’s arrival to the club on his Twitter page on Friday afternoon.

The Serie A side also welcomed the Eagles striker in a statement on its official website.

“SSC Napoli are delighted to announce the signing of Victor Osimhen from Lille on a permanent transfer,” the statement read.

The former Vfl Wolfsburg player is seen by the Gennaro Gattuso side as a capable replacement for Poland striker, Arkadiusz Milik, who has been linked with a move to Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur.

It is believed that he will wear jersey number 9, which has been donned by some of the club’s former greats including Gonzalo Higuaín, Gianfranco Zola, Daniel Fonseca, Nicola Amoruso and Simone Verdi.

Osimhen scored 18 goals and provided six assists in 38 games across all competitions for Lille during the 2019/2020 campaign. He was also voted the club’s player of the year.

On June 29, 2020, the former Wolfsburg striker was named the Best African Player In Ligue 1 for year 2020.

Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr, had earlier advised the talented forward to join a club where he’ll get regular playtime.

“He is a guy who loves to work hard and who needs to be in constant competition. I hope Victor talks about it with Gattuso and can then find the right role within the Napoli project,” Rohr told Marco Gordiano of Radio Punto Nuovo.

“Victor has a great player mentality. And often, in our chats, I advised him to take an important step and go to a level club, where he can find the right space to play continuously and grow.”
