Magu detained overnight as questioning enters second day

Acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, will face another day of questioning on Tuesday over the activities of the agency under his watch.

He was detained on Monday night at the police headquarters in Abuja.

The presidential panel probing him is headed by former president of the court of appeal, Ayo Salami.




According to reports, the panel which quizzed Magu at the Presidential Villa, may recommend his sack.

Reports said that the panel sat till 10pm on Monday after which Magu was detained.

The panel was constituted by President Muhammadu Buhari to probe various allegations levelled against Magu following a petition by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and the Department of State Service (DSS).

Malami’s memo allegedly accused Magu of diversion of recovered loot. The memo was said to contain 22 allegations against the embattled EFCC chairman.

Some of the allegations he listed are:
  • Discrepancies in the reconciliation records of the EFCC on recovered funds
  • Leaking investigative reports to the media before going to court
  • Sale of seized assets to cronies, associates and friends
  • Shortfall of N35 billion in his declaration of recovered funds
  • Insubordination to the AGF
  • Not providing enough evidences for the extradition of Diezani Alison-Madueke
  • Ignoring court order to unfreeze a N7 billion judgment in favour of a suspect
