Genevieve Nnaji joins Oscars Class of 2020 members

Veteran Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Genevieve Nnaji has joined the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscars) class of 2020.

The Academy Awards had extended the invitation to the Nigerian superstar and 818 other artists and executives who have distinguished themselves in the film industry to join the organisation.

And Genevieve, on Wednesday took to Twitter to respond to the Academy by accepting the invitation
In a statement on its website, the Academy said "those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy’s membership in 2020."

"The 2020 class is "45% women, 36% underrepresented ethnic/racial communities, and 49% international from 68 countries," the statement said.

The membership include 75 Oscar nominees, 15 winners, and five recipients of Scientific and Technical Awards.

“The Academy is delighted to welcome these distinguished fellow travelers in the motion picture arts and sciences.  We have always embraced extraordinary talent that reflects the rich variety of our global film community, and never more so than now,” said Academy President David Rubin.

The Academy added that, "the membership status of all Artists’ Representatives (agents) will change from Associates to Members-at-Large.  As Members-at-Large, agents will now have Oscars voting privileges."

Genevieve Nnaji broke into the international movie scene with her acclaimed film "Road To Yesterday" and cemented her stay with her directorial debut "Lionheart" after it became first Nigerian film to be acquired by Netflix in 2018.

In 2019, Lionheart also became the first Nigerian movie to be selected for the Oscar Awards.

The Nigerian Oscars Selection Committee (NOSC) had selected ‘Lionheart’ as the country’s submission to the ‘International Feature Film’ category of award for the 2020 Oscars.

However, the film was later disqualified by the Oscar Awards for violating an Academy rule that states that entries in the category must have “a predominantly non-English dialogue track.”
