COVID-19: Abia governor Ikpeazu recovers, his Ebonyi counterpart Umahi test positive

Governor of Abia state, Dave Umahi, has recovered from coronavirus, while his counterpart in Ebonyi, David Umahi, has been infected with the virus.

The Abia governor had announced that he tested positive for the disease on June 8. Some of his supporters were worried after he failed to recover within the usual 14 days period.

But in a statement on Saturday, Abia commissioner for information, John Kalu, said Ikpeazu was certified free of the disease on Friday.

“To the glory of God, repeat COVID-19 test conducted by Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) on samples submitted by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu on Thursday, 2nd July, 2020, returned negative result on Friday, 3rd July, 2020,” the statement read.

“Governor Ikpeazu is therefore deemed free of the virus according to the extant guidelines of NCDC and the World Health Organization (WHO).”

Meanwhile, after news of Ikpeazu's recovery came news of Umahi testing positive for the disease.

The Ebonyi governor broke the news in a statement he personally signed on Saturday.

The statement said the result of the test conducted by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) came back positive. Some aides of Umahi also tested positive.

The governor has directed his deputy, Kelechi Igwe, to take over the frontline coordination of the state’s fight against the pandemic.

Umahi, who said he is not showing any symptom at the moment, appealed to the people of Ebonyi to take the NCDC protocols more seriously.

He said for now, he would work from home and conduct all meetings virtually.

According to the NCDC,  Nigeria has confirmed a total of 27,564 COVID-19 cases, 11,069. recoveries and 628 deaths so far.
