Controversial cosmetic surgeon, Dr Anu arrested, charged to court over client’s death

A Lagos based cosmetic surgeon, Adepoju Anuoluwapo, popularly known as Dr. Anu, has been arrested and charged to court over allegations of failed cosmetic surgery that led to the death of one of her client.

On Friday, Federal Consumer Protection Council (FCCPC) announced the arrest of Dr Anu, who owns Med Contour Services Limited in Lagos.

The plastic surgeon was reportedly arrested on Wednesday and dragged to Federal High Court, Lagos, on Friday for failure to corporate with investigation.

She was arraigned for several complaints by unsatisfied clients who reported her to the FCCPC.

The case is "Federal Republic of Nigeria v. Dr. Adepoju Anuoluwapo & MedContour" and FCCPC Nigeria is the prosecutor.

In photos posted online, Dr. Onu was seen being led to court room by security operatives
Court document posted online revealed that Dr Anu was reported by three of her clients named, Marlene Adejumo Oluwakemi, Taiwo Omolola Temilade, and Vivian Onwuzuligbo.

It was stated that the cosmetic surgeon was reported because her services are unsafe for women.

One of the allegations against Dr Anu is that a failed cosmetic surgery done by her led to the death of one Mrs. Nneka Miriam Barbra Onwuzuligbo.

Dr Anu is also accused of making false claims about her services to prospective clients.

"The allegations are that the Defendants' services are unsafe for consumers and that the Defendants made false, misleading and deceptive representation in relation to the marketing of their services to them," the charge sheet reads

"In particular, the above mentioned Vivian Onwuzuligbo, a member of the family of one Mrs Nneka Miriam Barbra Onwuzuligbo (now deceased), alleged that the deceased died as a result of the failed Defendants' cosmetic surgery and she is privy to the events that led to the demise of the deceased."
According to the charge sheet, the arrest and criminal charge is because Dr Anu did not comply with the commission requirements for the investigation and refused to give them the information they demanded for.

"Dr Anu "without sufficient cause" failed or refused "to appear before the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission in compliance with the Commission's Summons date 15th day of April 2020," the charge sheet read.
PUNCH reports that he prosecuting counsel for the FCCPC, Babatunde Irukera, said the incidents happened between April 15 and May 4, 2020, at No. 11a Ladi Alakija Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

Irukera said Adepoju acted contrary to sections 33(3)(a) and 113(4)(a) of the FCCPC Act 2018 and was liable to be punished under sections 33(3) and 113(1) of the same Act, among others.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the five counts.

Justice Liman admitted her to bail on self-recognisance in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He adjourned till July 9 for the commencement of trial.
Earlier in the proceeding, the judge dismissed a preliminary objection by the defence lawyer, Marian Jones, challenging the validity of the charges and the court’s jurisdiction to entertain them.

On 15 April, the FCCPC closed down her Medcontour office for "illegal activities" and began investigations on the clinic after receiving petitions against the facility’s owner.

In a recent interview with The Boss Newspaper, Dr Anu reacted to the FCCPC shutting down her clinic, saying it was "unlawfully done"

She also blamed the sealing of the property on an "unsubstantiated claim" made by a social media influencer "about a procedure she received at the clinic."
Dr Anu, who graduated from the College of Medicine at the University of Lagos in 2015, insisted that she's good at her job and has carried out "well over 300 procedures" after she "had extensive training in cosmetic surgery."

However, complaints from dissatisfied customers got the attention of the FCCPC and she was arrested and charged to court.

The number of people going for surgery to change their body in Nigeria has been on the rise.
