Yobe governor named chairman of APC caretaker committee after Oshiomhole’s NWC is dissolved

The Adams Oshiomhole-led national working committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been dissolved.

Acting national chairman of the party, Victor Giadom, announced the development at the national executive council (NEC) meeting of the party at the state house in Abuja.

Governor of Yobe state, Mai-Mala Buni, was named chairman of the caretaker/extra-ordinary convention committee while the governors of Osun and Niger were appointed as members.

He was immediately sworn in by Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF).

Speaking after his appointment, the APC caretaker chairman, who is the former national secretary of the party, said: ”Today’s NEC meeting is a continuation of the last adjourned NEC meeting. So we are in no way in any aberration regarding the party constitution.”

The NWC had said the meeting was illegal because a seven-day notice is required to convoke a NEC meeting.

President Muhammadu Buhari recommended the dissolution of the NWC which NEC accepted.

But the council ratified all decisions taken regarding the Edo governorship primary election.

The APC was thrown into a leadership crisis after the court appeal upheld the suspension of Oshiomhole as the national chairman of the party.

At an emergency meeting on the evening of the same day, 17 members of the NWC loyal to Oshiomhole, appointed a former governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, as acting chairman.

Giadom, in a counter move, together with two other NWC members, addressed a press conference on June 17, when he declared himself as the acting chairman. He backed his action with the judgment of the FCT high court, which in March gave him the go-ahead to be the acting national chairman.

Despite his suspension by two Port Harcourt courts and his replacement as the deputy national secretary, Giadom on Tuesday issued a notice of the APC NEC meeting, which would hold today (Thursday).

But the Ajimobi-led NWC on Tuesday said having been suspended from the NWC, Giadom was not qualified to convene the NEC meeting.

But Buhari threw his weight behind Gaidom, an action which rankled the NWC.

The faction of the NWC had declined invitation by President Buhari for the meeting in Aso Rock today, describing the president’s decision to support Gaidom as ill-advised.
