Three other officers in George Floyd's death charged, autopsy shows deceased had COVID-19

The three other former Minneapolis police officers involved in George Floyd's death are now in custody

The trio who watched as their partner, Derek Chauvin, pinned the African American to the ground and crushed his neck with a knee for more than eight minutes have been charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder

Thomas Lane, 37, J. Alexander Kueng, 26, and Tou Thao, 34, face two charges each of aiding and abetting their fellow former officer in connection to Floyd's death, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said Wednesday.

Charges against Chauvin were also upgraded to second-degree murder, carrying the possibility of a longer sentence if convicted

According to Minnesota law, third-degree murder carries a sentence of up to 25 years and is filed in cases where someone's death was caused "without intent." Second-degree murder, or a murder that is not premeditated, carries a sentence of up to 40 years.

Meanwhile, according to autopsy report, George Floyd had coronavirus before his death.

The report of the autopsy carried out by Hennepin County Medical Examiner, however, said the disease did not contribute to his death.

The testing for the disease was carried out via a nasal swab.

The autopsy released publicly read: “Viral testing (Minnesota Department of Health, postmortem nasal swab collected 5/26/2020): positive for 2019-nCoV RNA by PCR.”

Floyd was said to have tested positive for the coronavirus on April 3 and was asymptomatic when he died in police custody.

The autopsy confirmed the cause of his death was a forceful restraint on the neck, which was by former officer Chauvin.

His death on May 25 has triggered protest across the US and in other countries, calling for justice and an end to racism.

Protests turned violent in some parts of the country, forcing President Donald Trump to deploy force in quelling the crisis.
