Benue coronavirus index case, Susan Okpe released from 'detention' after 58 days

The coronavirus index case in Benue, Susan Okpe Lawani, was on Wednesday evening released after almost two months in the Isolation centre,

Her daughter, who is based in the UK, first shared the news on social media thanking God that her mother is finally free after 58 days in 'detention'.

She wrote: "Praise God, this evening my mother just been released. Thank you for your support. Thank you for sharing, thank you for reposting. She is FREE!."
Okpe's release came a day after her daughter launched an online campaign to free her mother, drawing the attention of the international community to her plight.

Okpe had been in a running battle with the Benue government and the NCDC shortly after she was reported to be the first coronavirus cases in the state.

She was said to have tested positive for the disease and moved into an Isolation center, first in Benue, and then in Abuja. All along, she had maintained that she wasn't ill.

All through her stay in the isolation centre, she has insisted that she never tested positive for the deadly virus and refused to take medications unless she's shown the "real" result of her test.

She said the result she was shown was fake because the information therein were not hers, including the age and date of admission.

She also refused to take another test that will confirm if she's now negative for COVID-19.

In a video she posted after leaving the isolation centre, Okpe said she was released after health experts said that she has met the WHO requirements.

"I've just been given my test and they said I'm still positive, but I can go, that I've met the WHO requirements.

"I'm finally leaving the detention centre. I'm leaving the incarceration center," she said in the video as she packed her bags and left the isolation centre.

She added that she cannot reveal where she's going to, for security reasons, but promised to release another video when she's settled.
