Odion Ighalo misses Manchester United's Spain training camp over coronavirus fears

Odion Ighalo is not attending Manchester United’s training camp in Spain this weekend, because the club fears travel restrictions relating to the coronavirus outbreak will prevent him returning to England.

The 30-year-old striker touched down in Manchester last weekend, following his unexpected deadline-day loan switch from Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua.

According to Chinese officials, the coronavirus has claimed 724 lives in China since the outbreak began in December.

As the coronavirus spreads globally, several countries have cut down on travel to and from China, potentially causing complications for the Nigerian who joined United on a temporary deal until the of the season on deadline day.

“Odion will stay in Manchester, because he arrived from China in the last 14 days,” United’s manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, told MUTV.

“Because of the situation in China, we’re not sure if he’d be allowed back into England if he leaves the country again. He’s staying here working with a personal coach, on an individual programme, and his family then can settle in England as well. That’s a plus.

"Of course he might have liked to have come with the players and get to know them, but with the risk [of border restrictions tightening], we don’t want to take that.”

The club has described the decision on Ighalo as a “precautionary measure”.

United return from their Spain training camp to take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on February 17 before the first leg of their Europa League knockout tie against Club Brugge.

Meanwhile, the former Nigeria international is pushing himself to be ready for the Red Devils’ next game against Chelsea

In an attempt to sharpen his fitness Ighalo has been taking double training sessions with Great Britain's Olympic Taekwondo squad in Manchester.

Ighalo joined United while Chinese Super League was in the off-season, and having not played competitively in months, he teamed up with the squad preparing for the 2020 Summer Olympics to be held in Tokyo.

United are seventh in the Premier League after 25 matches and sit six points behind Chelsea, who occupy the last Champions League qualification spot.
