David Lyon was practicing for his swearing in tomorrow before Supreme Court sacked him

David Lyon was on Thursday sacked as the Bayelsa State governor-elect by the Supreme Court.

The apex court nullified the election of the APC candidate and his running mate, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, on the ground that they were not qualified to contest the election.

Lyon and his deputy were to be sworn-in on Friday, and the PDP flag was on Thursday morning removed from the Bayelsa Government House in preparation for the inauguration.

Now photos Lyon practicing steps of swearing in before the Supreme Court bomb, has emerged.

He was said to be at a rehearsal for his swearing-in when Supreme Court sacked him.

Dressed in a multi-coloured shirt and flanked by military personnel, Lyon was seen in pictures having his pre-swearing-in exercise on the parade ground.

The erstwhile Bayelsa State governor-elect was seen in all-smiles waving at supporters who cheered him.

He was apparently still at the parade ground when the news of his sacking hits him.

Early in the year, Lyon, who was yet to be sworn in as Bayelsa State governor, said he had been awarded Nigeria’s best performing governor for 2019.

Although Lyon did not mention the organization that awarded him but attributed the award to ‘God’.

“I am not even used to receiving awards,” Lyon said while his supporters celebrated his acclaimed feat with applauses.

“This will not be the first and it will not be the last.”

In the Supreme Court ruling, the five-man panel led by Justice Mary Peter-Odili ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to the APC candidates as the winners of the November 16, 2019 governorship election in the state.

The court ordered INEC to issue fresh certificates to the candidates of the party with the next highest votes and with the required constitutional spread of votes in the results of the election, which are the PDP candidates, Douye Diri and his running mate.

Justice Ejembi Ekwo, who read the lead judgment of the apex, made the orders after disqualifying the APC’s deputy governorship candidate, Degi-Eremienyo, as a candidate in the election.

The court upheld the November 12, 2019 judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja which had disqualified Degi-Eremienyo in the election for submitting forged certificates to INEC.

The court ruled Degi-Eremienyo’s disqualification had infected the joint ticket with which he and the governorship candidate, Lyon, ran for and won the November 16, 2019 election.
