INEC declares Smart Adeyemi winner of Kogi west senatorial election, defeating Dino Melaye

The Candidate of APC, Smart Adeyemi, has been declared winner of the Kogi West senatorial district election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Returning Officer of the election, Professor Olajide Lawal, announced the result after the supplementary election which held on Saturday, November 30.

According to INEC, Adeyemi polled a total of 88,373 votes to defeat the incumbent Senator Dino Melaye of the PDP who scored 62,133 votes.

Rufus Aiyenigba of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) came third in the poll with 659 votes.

Melaye had sent Adeyemi out of the senate in 2015 and also defeated him in the February election but the tribunal and appeal court had annulled Melaye’s victory and ordered a rerun election.

His victory at the February poll was challenged in court by Adeyemi on three grounds of irregularities, over voting and non-compliance with the electoral acts.

The Court of Appeal ruled that the election was flawed and order re-election.

The rerun which held on November 16, however, ended inconclusively and the INEC scheduled Saturday for a supplementary election.
