The social media bill in Nigerian senate is a copy & paste from Singapore

The Protection from Internet Falsehood and Manipulations Bill also known as the Social Media Bill currently in Nigerian Senate was copied verbatim from Singapore.

The bill passed second reading on Wednesday with support by majority of Senators, despite opposition to the proposed legislation by Nigerian citizens.

The social media bill is a replication of Singapore’s Protection from Online Falsehoods & Manipulation Act 2019 signed into law in June.

It was copied and pasted in the senate on November 5 by Muhammad Sani Musa (APC-Niger East)

A similar bill that prescribes a death penalty for “hate speech” is also before Nigerian lawmakers.
