'Many women cause domestic violence by their actions' – Commissioner for Women Affairs in Lagos, Lola Akande

Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), Lola Akande, has said that many women, by their actions, are the cause of some of the cases of domestic violence recorded in the state and by extension, in Nigeria.

Akande said this at a programme on Management of Domestic Violence, organised by the ministry in Lagos today.

She was represented at the programme by Mrs Olushola Falana, Director, Women Development Department, WAPA.

South African student spends N22.5m in 73 days after receiving N389m financial aid in error

A South African student Sibongile Mani is currently in trouble after a system error led her into a spending spree.

The accountancy student at Walter Sisulu University (WSU), received a payment of R14.1 million (over N388m) – instead of R1‚400 (N38,500) spent about R818‚000 (N22m) between June 1st and August 13th, 2017 when it was reversed.

According to TIMES Live, Intellimali, the company that administers financial aid allowances at the school, said it is treating the case as fraud.

Instagram user @adeola_cash shared a short video of a Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officer struggling with the driver of a moving vehicle enroute Ibadan.

@adeola_cash insinuated that the officer was seeking a N1,000 bribe.

British Ministers visit Osinbajo, donates £200m to Boko Haram victims

Britain’s Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Secretary for International Development Priti Patel on Thursday met with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo in continuation of their official visit to Nigeria.

Speaking to newsmen after the meeting, Johnson said United Kingdom is ready to assist Nigeria in humanitarian development and military fronts.

The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said over 110,000 people in 24 communities including Makurdi were displaced by flood.

The Executive Secretary of the agency, Boniface Ortese, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Makurdi on Wednesday that over 2,769 households were also affected.

Nigerian Universities, Polytechnics, others release their cut off marks for admission

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, was recently criticized by Nigerians after they fixed minimum cut off marks for admissions into universities in Nigeria at 120, polytechnics and colleges of education at 100, while that of innovative enterprising institutes at 110.

However, institutions are at liberty to raise their cut off marks for admission above the minimum set by JAMB and they sure did.

Police used death threat to make Evans plead guilty – Lawyer

On Wednesday, suspected kidnap kingpin Chukwudumeme Omwuamadike, popularly known as Evans pleaded guilty to 2-counts of conspiracy and kidnapping when he was arraigned before Justice Hakeem Oshodi of an Ikeja High Court, Lagos.

Hurricane Harvey survivor curses out CNN reporter for interviewing her

A woman, who said she was stranded "for five days" in the Hurricane Harvey devastation, broke down and lashed out at a CNN reporter for interviewing her on live TV.

The mother, introduced as Danielle, said she waited for police to come rescue them but when they did not arrive after 36 hours, she walked through "four feet of water" with her two young children to make it to a gas station and then to a shelter, just to get food.

'Evans pleads guilty to kidnapping charges' (Photos)


Suspected kidnap kingpin Chukwudubem Onwuamadike popularly referred to as Evans has reportedly pleaded guilty to the kidnapping charges leveled against him.

According to Premium Times, he and five of his suspected accomplices were arraigned on a two-count charge of conspiracy and kidnapping at the Ikeja High Court.

According to the government, had conspired on February 14 at about 7.45 pm at Ilupeju, Lagos, to kidnap one Donatus Dunu and collect €223,000 for his release.

Former military administrator of Kaduna state, Abubakar Umar, has stated that the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is not a common criminal as he is being described by the government – warning the Federal against re-arresting him.

On Monday, the office of the attorney-general of the federation (AGF) filed an application for the revocation of Kanu’s bail at a federal high court in Abuja.

According to the AGF, the IPOB leader has flouted all the conditions for release.

The president returned to the country August 19 at 4.36pm.
