Zahra Buhari’s wedding reportedly postponed

The wedding ceremony of Zahra Buhari, daughter of President Muhammadu Buhari has been postponed, Daily Trust reports.

Zahra was reportedly expected to get married to Ahmed Indimi, son of billionaire, Mohammed Indimi during the weekend.

According to the media outfit, the wedding was postponed due to the President’s insistence on a low-key ceremony.

FG approves 2017 budget proposal

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved the 2017 budget proposal for onward submission to National Assembly for final approval.

The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udoma Udu Udoma, made this known at the end of the meeting of the Federal Executive Council in Abuja.
He stated that the approved document would soon be presented to the National Assembly by President Buhari.

FG sacks Tourism boss Sally Mbanefo

Sally Mbanefo, the Director General of the Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), has been relieved of her duties.

According to the Nation, the Director General has been asked to handover the affairs of NTDC to the next most senior officer.

The removal of the Chief Executive was contained in a November 27, 2016 letter which was signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal.

Buhari’s government wants to tax Nigerians to death – Fayose

Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose has said the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was ready to impose more tax on Nigerians that will further impoverish them.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Fayose said the Federal Government “wants to tax Nigerians to death.”

American police use water spray, rubber bullets and other weapons on protesters in North Dakota

American law enforcement engaged in a stand off with protesters at Standing Rock in North Dakota. 

The protesters were against a government decision to build an oil pipeline called the Dakota Access Pipeline through their land which will involve environmental degradation and the displacement of local people majority of whom are Native Americans.

Police have acknowledged using sponge rounds, bean bag rounds, stinger rounds, teargas grenades, pepper spray, Mace, Tasers and a sound weapon.

PDP senators walk out of plenary over defection of member to APC

Senators representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday walked out of the chamber in protest, The Cable reports.

Before the walk out Senate President Bukola Saraki had announced the defection of Yele Omogunwa, a senator from Ondo south, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Omogunwa’s defection did not augur well the PDP senators led by Godswill Akpabio, who demanded that Saraki declare his (Omogunwa’s) seat vacant.

NCC suspends planned hike in data tariff

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has suspended the planned increase of data tariff following public outcry against the decision.

The increase was expected to take effect from December 1 but has now been suspended.

NCC Director of Public Affairs in a statement on Wednesday said, “Following the concerns that visited the directive to introduce price floor for data segment of the telecommunications sector beginning from December 1, 2016, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has suspended any further action in that direction.

FG didn’t order NCC to increase data tariff – Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu

The Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu has said the Federal Government did not give the National Communication Commission (NCC) an order to increase data tariff.

The NCC had announced a review of data tariff at 0.90k/MB taken effect from December 1.

However, Shittu while speaking on Raypower said the NCC must have taken the decision due to other reasons different from politics.

The Senate has ordered the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to halt the planned increase of prices for data.

The Senate gave the order on Wednesday after a motion raised by the Deputy Senate Leader, Ibn N’Allah.

In a statement on its official Twitter account, @NGRSenate, the upper chamber condemn the action of the regulatory agency.

Man impersonates IG of Police, defrauds Saudi doctor

The police has arrested a suspected fraudster, Ekperebuike Akadonpe for allegedly parading himself as the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on the Internet, The Punch reports.

The 29-year-old suspect was also alleged to have defrauded a Saudi Arabia-based doctor, identified as Hassan Alkahallaf, to the tune of $10,000.

Alkahallaf, who had been defrauded twice before by Nigerians fell into Akadonpe’s trap.

APC suspends Senator Shehu Sani indefinitely

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has placed the senator representing Kaduna central senatorial district and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, Senator Shehu Sani, on indefinite suspension.

According to Thisday, Sani’s suspension was announced in a letter addressed to him.

The letter was signed by the Secretary of the APC in his Ward 6, Tudun Wada ward, Kaduna, Mallam Awal Abdulhamid Garba.

Law School: 24 students bag First Class, highest since inception

24 students graduated with First Class at the August/September 2016 Bar final examinations of the Nigerian Law School, the highest since the school was established, Thisday reports.

The Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Mr. Olanrewaju Onadeko (SAN) while giving a breakdown of the figures, disclosed that “of their numbers, 24 candidates attained the First Class grade, while 567 candidates obtained the Second Class Upper Division,” adding that the number of first class candidates that were presented was the largest since the inception of the Nigerian Law School.

MASSOB declares fast for Nnamdi Kanu

The Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has called on all Igbos to fast and pray for the release of leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, and others being detained by the Federal Government.

According to The Punch, the leader of the group, Uchenna Madu, made the call in a statement on Monday.

Madu said all MASSOB members in Imo State would converge on the group’s headquarters in Okwe, Onuimo Local Government Area of the state for the prayer session.

Gunmen kill Chinese, 3 others in Nasarawa

Four workers of a mining company were killed on Monday by gunmen in Nasarawa.

Those killed included a Chinese national and three Nigerians.

The incident happened at Alongani village in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa.

Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Kennedy Idirisu, confirmed the killing to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Lafia on Tuesday.

Seventy-six people are confirmed dead following a plane crash outside Medellin, Colombia.

The charter plane with 81 people on board, including players from a Brazilian soccer team, Chapecoense, crashed near Rionegro, Colombia, according to the country's civil aviation department.

The plane declared an emergency between the municipalities of La Ceja and La Union, according to a statement from Colombian aviation officials. The crash occurred in an area called Cerro El Gordo near Medellin, officials said.

Senate denies frustrating 2017 budget process

The Senate has described as “misleading, malicious and false” a report which accused the National Assembly of frustrating the submission of the 2017 Appropriation Bill, The Punch reports.

The report had alleged that the legislature took the action because of Presidency’s refusal to approve the constituency projects of the lawmakers.

In the statement signed by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Aliyu Abdullahi, the Senate said the report was “completely false.”

We will start charging Nigerians VAT on Passports – FIRS

The Executive Chairman of the the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Tunde Fowler on Monday said Nigerians will now pay Value Added Tax (VAT) before obtaining their passports.

Fowler made the statement at the 136th meeting of the Joint Tax Board in Abuja.

He also said those who wants to renew their passports or want a new one will have to provide evidence of tax payment.

And so, it’s time for the guys on my list and it’s the fourth year of my doing this. Thanks to all who have been following this particular segment annually and urging me on to keep on with it.

2016 had a number of new actors who were quite good in some movies. There were some good actors from the old stock too who had a great year. However, one had to prune down to this list after tediously sifting through a shortlist. There are some names I should give Special Mention, who did not make the list for purely technical reasons on my template but who stood out in their own right in acting fares in 2016. Sambasa Nzeribe, a relatively new actor is one to watch out for. Daniel K Daniel had a good year too, even winning a couple of major awards for ‘Best Actor’.  OC Ukeje had a good outing too as well as a fantastic stage actor called Patrick Dibuah.

Update: Policemen protest in Ondo over non-payment of allowance for governorship election

Some security agents deployed for Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State slept in some police formations as they claimed that their allowances had not been paid.

Investigation by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Okitipupa revealed that the security agencies involved included the police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Department of State Security (DSS).

Some of the security agents, who spoke to NAN on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, claimed they slept in any available police station in the area of deployment and were unable to feed well because of unpaid allowance.

A Senior Legislative Assistant with the National Assembly, Abubakar Doki on Monday collapsed and died in the National Assembly premises.

The deceased who was said to be in his early 50, was until his death, a Senior Legislative Aide (SLA) attached to the office of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yussuf Lasun.

The deceased was said to have taken ill at the early hours of Monday and was brought to the National Assembly clinic.
