Pope Francis and Lutheran church leaders were in Sweden on Monday to commemorate the Protestant Reformation, once one of the most divisive events in the history of Christianity.

The pope was joined by Bishop Munib Younan, the head of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), and Rev. Martin Junge, the LWF General Secretary, at an ecumenical prayer service in Lund cathedral.
They are later due to participate in an event in the nearby city of Malmo.

Bishop Kukah visits EFCC custody to check on Fani-Kayode, Obanikoro, Abati, others

Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan Kukah on Monday paid a visit to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detention cell.

He was received by the acting Chairman of the anti-graft agency, Ibrahim Magu, who took him on a tour of the facility.

During his visit, Kukah prayed for the inmates as he held discussions with Femi Fani-Kayode, Musiliu Obanikoro and Reuben Abati who are being detained by the Commission.

Human Rights watch accuses soldiers, police, other govt workers of raping & sexually exploiting Female IDPs

 
Camp leaders, Police Officers, Soldiers, Vigilante groups and other authorities working at Internally Displaced Persons camp in the North, have been accused of raping and sexually exploiting some of the Female IDPs.

A report published this morning by the Human Rights Watch, states that women and girls abused by members of the security forces and vigilante groups – civilian self-defense groups working with government forces in their fight against Boko Haram say they feel powerless and fear retaliation if they report the abuse. A 17-year-old girl said that just over a year after she fled the frequent Boko Haram attacks in Dikwa, a town 56 miles west of Maiduguri, a policeman approached her for “friendship” in the camp, and then he raped her.

Arms deals: Dasuki intends to call former President Goodluck Jonathan as witness

Former National Security Adviser (NSA) Sambo Dasuki, who is currently on trial for alleged mismanagement of $2.1 billion arms funds, says he intends to invite former President Goodluck Jonathan as his witness.

Jonathan has in the past condemned the charges against Dasuki, claiming that there is no way the ex-NSA could have stolen about $2.2billion funds for arms.

Shettima alleges some North-east governors are lying about the impact of Boko Haram insurgency to get donations from international agencies

 
Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, has said some of his colleagues in the North-east were making false claims about the situation of internally displaced persons and destruction wrecked by Boko Haram insurgents in their states.
"When it comes to goodies, you will be seeing states that suffer the least, exaggerating the sufferings inflicted on their society by Boko Haram as if such a thing is a badge of honor."
Speaking on Friday, October 28th in Government House, Maiduguri when he hosted a delegation of the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA), led by its deputy regional director for West and East Africa, Beatrice Mutali, Shettima said the governors were exaggerating the impact of the insurgency in their domains to rake in donations from philanthropists and international donor agencies.

Goalkeeper of Gambia women's national team dies while attempting to cross to Europe by boat from Libya

 
Gambia Sports commission is in a shock following the sudden death of Fatim Jawara. Jawara, goalkeeper to the country's women's national team, who met her death while attempting to cross to Europe by boat from Libya where she is believed to have spent weeks in a secluded camp.

Fatim, said to be loved by former teammates, was part of the Gambian team that made history, putting the country's name on the map in the women's U-17 World Cup in Azerbaijan in 2012.

Gambia News reports that she was goalkeeper to erstwhile Women's First Division champions Red Scorpions and starred in Gambia's thrashing of a visiting Scottish side female side Glasgow Girls FC months ago.

EfCC arraigns Orji Uzor Kalu in Lagos for money laundering

 
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, today Oct 31st, arraigned former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, before a Federal High court in Lagos over money laundering charges. 

Kalu who was governor of the state between 1999 and 2007, had approached the Court in Abuja to stop the EFCC from prosecuting him in Lagos, but his request was denied.

Militant group blows up pipeline, rejects Niger Delta meeting with Buhari

The Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate has attacked a crude oil delivery line at Effurun-Otor Ughelli South Council Area of Delta State.

The militant group destroyed the pipeline to announce its rejection of Tuesday’s meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and some leaders of the region.

In a statement by its spokesman, Aldo Agbalaja, the group claimed responsibility for the attack on the pipeline owned by the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company.

Arrested Supreme Court Justices voluntarily withdraw from sittings

Justices Okoro Inyang and Sylva Ngwuta, both of the Supreme Court who were arrested over allegations of corruption have withdrawn from sittings until they are able to clear their names, Punch reports.

This was disclosed in a meeting by the outgoing Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, which he held with some members of the Nigerian Bar Association.

A source who was at the meeting said the CJN revealed that the justices voluntarily withdrew from sittings.

Secondary school student dies as protesters reject Jimoh Ibrahim as PDP’s Candidate for Ondo governorship election


The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday, cleared Jimoh Ibrahim of the Ali Modu Sheriff-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the party’s candidate in the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Ondo State, as against Eyitayo Jegede of the Ahmed Makarfi faction.
Following the announcement, protests erupted in the state, and over the weekend, a Secondary School student of St Joseph College on his way to school lost his life.

Vanguard reports that the student was said to have been hit by the tear gas canister, released by the police in dispersing the rioters in Ondo town, near Ife garage.

5 soldiers, 4 civilians killed as Boko Haram ambush troops in Borno

The Nigerian Army says suspected Boko Haram terrorists ambushed and killed five soldiers, three vigilantes and one Civilian JTF in Borno on Saturday.

A statement by Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, on Sunday said that 19 other soldiers and one Civilian JTF sustained various degrees of injuries during the attack.

Usman said the troops of Operation Lafiya Dole were ambushed by the terrorists  at Ugundiri village, Damboa Local Government Area,  while returning to base after clearance operations on suspected Boko Haram terrorists hideouts in Talala and Ajigin in southern Borno.

One of the survivors of 2006 ADC plane crash in Abuja which killed 96 people tells his amazing story

 

Shortly after taking off from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, the ADC plane crashed, broke up and caught fire in a corn field in 2006.

96 people died, including a woman working on the field, who was reportedly killed after being struck by debris from the crash.

 The primary cause of the crash was bad weather but the immediate cause was the pilot's refusal to acknowledge warning given to him by the control tower not to take off due to wind shear alert.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said this in a statement while reacting to claims by two judges, Justice Okoro Inynag and Justice Sylvester Ngwuta who both alleged that Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi tried to bribe them to pervert.

Police, ex-husband conspired against woman accused of sending assassins after him – Lawyer


Ahuoiza Adesokun, a lawyer and friend to Oluchi Tochukwu, a banker who was accused of sending assassins after her ex-husband has said it was a set up to put the accused in detention.

Oluchi was accused of sending assassins after her husband and reportedly asked them to deposit his car in her brother’s place in a story that went viral.

However, Adesokun in a statement said the accused was a victim of domestic violence who had been threatened by her husband to kill her.

Soldiers neutralise another suicide bomber targeting Maiduguri IDP camp

Soldiers on Sunday shot dead a suspected male suicide bomber trying to attack an IDP camp which nearly came under attack in Maiduguri, Borno State capital on Saturday, Premium Times reports.

One of bombs strapped to the suicide bomber immediately went off after he was shot by vigilant soldiers.

A leader of the civilian JTF, Alhaji Dan-Batta said the bomber was lurking around the camp fence when he was spotted.
