2 more Nigerians killed in South Africa

Barely a week after a 35-year-old Nigerian businessman, Ikejiaku Chinedu was killed in the Limpopo province in South Africa by operatives of a private security firm, tragedy has struck again as two more Nigerians have been killed in the Guateng Province, Johannesburg.

According to the President of the Nigerian Union in South Africa, Ikechukwu Anyene, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Port Harcourt in a telephone interview from Pretoria he said the two men were killed on Friday, July 29, at different areas of Johannesburg.

1 dead, 4 injured in separate Texas shootings

One person was killed and four were injured early Sunday in two separate shootings in a crowded area of downtown Austin, Texas, police said.

The first incident began at 2:17 a.m. local time when police received reports of gunshots, Austin Police Chief of Staff Brian Manley said in a news conference.

He said a woman, believed to be in her 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prisons boss says 5 of the 13 escaped Prisoners in Koton Karfe Prisons recaptured

The Controller-General of Prisons, Ja’afaru Ahmed, has confirmed that five of the 13 prisoners who escaped from Koton Karfe prison in the early hours of Saturday have been re-arrested.

This is contained in a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Service, Francis Enobore and made available to newsmen on Sunday in Abuja.

The statement said that Ja’afaru confirmed the re-arrest of the inmates when he made on-the-spot assessment of the prison.

FG to start paying ex-militants from Monday

The Federal Government has agreed to start paying ex-militants on Monday in line with the amnesty programme.

The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brig-Gen. Paul Boroh (rtd) made the information available to the media on Sunday.

This was contained in a statement released on Sunday by the Head of the Media and Communication Department of the office of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Abuja, Mr. Piriye Keyaramo.

How Timothy Iro was killed by a police officer in Kano, Igbo Traders Association demands for justice

The Igbo Traders Association, ITA, in Kano state has demanded for justice over the gruesome murder of Tochukwu  Iro by police officers in Sabon Gari, Kano State on Wednesday, July 27.

Tochukwu Iro, a patent medicine dealer was shot by trigger-happy police officers attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, of the Kano state Police Command.

According to eyewitness accounts, the 40-year-old married father of two children from from Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State was allegedly killed at about 12 noon Wednesday along France Road, opposite First Baptist Church in Sabon Gari area of the state.

24 hours after employment, driver absconds with company vehicle

30-year-old man, Jimoh Taoreed, pictured above has been arrested after he disappeared with a van used to distribute sachet water produced by his employer, the Anglican Diocese, at Bodija area of Ibadan, Oyo State, barely 24 hours after he was employed. 

Parading Jimoh before newsmen at the state police command, the state police commissioner, Leye Oyebade said Jimoh applied for the job with the intention to steal.

When he applied for the job, he gave his name as Saheed Popoola and said that he was an indigene of Eruwa town in Ibarapa area of the state. However after his arrest, it was discovered that his real name was Jimoh Taoreed and he hailed from Irawo Owode in Atisbo Local Government Area.

JAMB withdraws 2016 admission list forwarded to various universities

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has withdrawn the 2016 admission list it forwarded to different Nigerian Universities. 

This was disclosed in a statement by the body's spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin released today July 31st.

Budget padding: Jibrin releases pictures of Dogara’s ‘guest houses’ in Abuja

Former Chairman of the House committee on Appropriations, Abdulmumin Jibrin has released pictures of what he called guest houses of Speaker Dogara along Panama Crescent in Maitama Abuja.

Jibrin sent the pictures to Premium Times Saturday night.

Jibrin had repeatedly said in his allegations that Dogara allegedly looted funds meant for legislative duties personal use.

He had accused Dogara and three other principal officers of trying to part the budget with N40bn, an allegation they have denied.

Nigerian Military attacks militants in Ogun State

The Nigerian Military has continued the aerial bombardment of Fatola, the hideout of militants and pipeline vandals in the Arepo area of Ogun State. 

According to online reports, the air raid happened in yesterday afternoon and was said to have lasted 30 minutes. A fighter jet fired missiles at the Iroko creeks, leaving no fewer than 100 suspected militants dead and their camps/shanties destroyed.

Residents were caught unawares and had to run from their homes to avoid being hit during the bombardment.

Lebanese Mathematics teacher killed in Sokoto

A well known Lebanese Mathematics Teacher, Moin Amsuri, who teaches at the Nagarta College in Sokoto state was murdered by unknown gunmen at his residence in Yauri, Sokoto on Thurs. July 28.

The state police spokesperson, El-Mustapha Sani, who confirmed the incident, said the gunmen are suspected to be armed robbers as the deceased Toyota car has been missing since the incident.

MEND says FG is ready for conditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, Henry Okah, others

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has said that they are currently in talks with the  federal government.

The group in a statement by its spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo on Saturday said that the FG, as part of the deal for a return of peace to the oil-rich Niger Delta, has agreed to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), a former MEND leader, Henry Okah, who is serving a jail sentence in South Africa, Okah’s younger brother, Charles, and Obi Nwabueze.

The statement, according to Vanguard, read:

FG bans conference bags, T-shirts, souvenirs, at workshops, seminars in order to cut cost

The Federal Government has banned the procurement and distribution of conference bags, T-shirts and other souvenirs at events such as Conferences and Seminars funded by Federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

This is contained in a statement made available to newsmen on Sunday in Abuja by the Director of Information, Federal Ministry of Finance, Salisu Dambatta.

It said President Buhari had approved the ban following recommendations by the Efficiency Unit.

A couple of days ago controversial Nollywood actress, Halima Abubakar got some backlash for posting that she can’t wait to be “disvirgined” and in a recent interview with Punch, she clears up what she meant by the statement.

She says “Why would people become annoyed because I said I am a virgin? Just because I’m in the industry does not mean I am badly behaved. Not everyone is sexually active. You can have a boyfriend and not be sexually active. The reaction I got shows the mentality of the people. If I say I’m a virgin, I am and if I say I am not, then I am not. Some Ministers are squatting and living in conditions equal to that of most Nigerians - Amaechi

During an interview with Osasu Igbinedion on The Osasu Show, the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, said some ministers are currently squatting in Abuja, and live like regular Nigerians.
Amaechi said:
“Listen to me; do you know that ministers, as we are talking now, some of them are squatting? We are living in conditions equal to that of most Nigerians”.

Kaduna community blame recent earth tremor on the "activities of prostitutes and homosexuals"

Residents of the Hayin Magina area of Ikara, in Kaduna State has blamed the recent mini-earthquake they witnessed, on the "activities of prostitutes and homosexuals." 

 The earth tremor manifested largely on a massive rock and affected nearby houses. It caused cracks on the rock and visible cracks on walls of houses. Some witnesses described it as having been a thunderous noise which sounded like a bomb blast. It woke sleeping residents at about 10:43pm, Daily Trust reports.

Some houses in the area were deserted, as the occupants were said to have left out of fear. The remaining inhabitants, also, are visibly shaken and are still shaking from the experience.

Ijaw leaders warn militants not to declare a Republic of Niger Delta

The leaders of Thoughts of Ijaw ethnic nationality in the Niger Delta region at a meeting in Warri, Delta State, hosted by Ijaw national leader, Chief Edwin Clark over the weekend, warned Ijaw militants against their vow to declare a Republic of Niger-Delta.

At the meeting were, Bayelsa state governor, Hon Henry Seriake Dickson, Deputy Governor of Delta state, Mr. Kingsley Otuaro, former Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Sir Gabriel Toby, former Minister of Culture, Alabo Tonye Graham-Douglas, former Minister of Police Affairs, Alaowei Brodrick Bozimo.

I was shocked by the trenchant reaction to my piece on the July 15 attempted coup in Turkey from at least two persons. The piece titled “Nigerians and the Failed Coup in Turkey” (The Guardian, Sunday, July 17) had fetched a mail and direct messages from a concerned Nigerian who objected to my description of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a bad guy- an intolerant, arrogant, temperamental dictator who after July 15 could become even more authoritarian.
The fellow praised Erdogan and spoke glowingly about how well the Turkish economy has fared under his watch. I also got a list of current economic indicators on Turkey sent to me.

RIO 2016: Nigeria U23 Team Stranded in Atlanta as Awoniyi leaves camp

Four days to their opening game at the Rio 2016 Olympics, the Nigeria U23 National Team returned to training on Friday evening, having skipped their workouts for about two days following uncertainty in the camp, Vanguard reports.

All selected 18 players trained under the guidance of manager Samson Siasia, and the session lasted for about two hours at their base in Atlanta, USA.

However, there are reports that players and officials of the Dream Team VI remain stranded in Atlanta, unaware of when they are leaving for the Olympic Games in Rio and are praying for manna to fall from heaven.

Leader of the Indegenous People of Biafra, IPOB and Director of Radio Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has reportedly sponsored the 2016 Kuje Prisons Football Championship, in Abuja, where he is being detained along with two others for alleged treasonable charges.

It was learnt that Kanu declared the competition open, yesterday, saying his main purpose for sponsoring this year’s edition was to enable inmates have freedom and relate with one another.

"It was a traumatic experience" - Says Catholic priest who spoke to the executed Nigerians in Indonesia

A Catholic priest who was present at Nusakambangan prison in Indonesia during last Thursday's executions of three Nigerian drug convicts and one local drug lord, has described the experience as 'traumatic'

Father Charles Burrows, who is based in Cilacap near the prison, was called there to speak with two of the three Nigerians, who were among 4 death row prisoners executed by firing squad.

Father Burrows said he doesn't know if the executed prisoners suffered. He said he had been present in the past when it has taken several minutes for prisoners to die.
