Ikpeazu reportedly prevented from entering Abia government house

Following the decision of the Independent National Electoral Committee (INEC) to issue a Certificate of Return to millionaire businessman, Uche Ogah, as the governor of Abia state, hundreds of people in Umuahia, the state capital, have blocked the Government House, YNaija reports.

According to a source who spoke to YNaija, Okezie Ikpeazu, the ousted Governor of the state was prevented from gaining access to the government house by supporters of the governor-elect, Ogah.

The source said Ogah, who is believed to be on his way back to Umuahia from Abuja, had informed his supporters that he would receive the Certificate of Return before travelling to Abuja.

Court dissolves 15-year marriage after wife complained of constant abuse and assault by Mother-in-law

A Lagos Island Customary Court on Wednesday dissolved the 15-year marriage between one Dapo A. and his wife, Titilayo, over constant abuse and assault by the latter’s mother-in-law.

The President of the court, Awos Awosola, ordered the dissolution of the marriage after concluding that the union had broken down irretrievably.

“The marriage between the two parties has broken beyond redemption. The marriage between the two is hereby dissolved with effect from today, June 29th,” Awosola ruled.

Olisa Metuh offers to refund N400m to FG

Embattled former Publicity Secretary of PDP, Olisa Metuh, has offered to refund the N400 million from the alleged arms deal procurement fund that was traced to him. 
In a statement released by his lawyer, Onyechi Ikpazu, Metuh said he was returning the money to signify his support for President Muhammadu Buhari's anti-corruption war. Metuh is currently undergoing trial for money laundering at a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Court stops Abia Chief Judge and others from swearing-in Uche Ogah as Governor (Photos)

Following a court order, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) today issued a Certificate of Return to Mr Uche Ogah, who came second at the last Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primaries in Abia State.

On the account of allegedly using fake tax returns during the primaries, Justice Okon Abang had stated that the incumbent governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu was never qualified to run in the PDP primaries as a governorship candidate. He nullified Ikpeazu's election and ordered INEC to issue a certificate of return to Ogah.

Eid al-Fitr: FG declares July 5th & 6th as Public Holiday

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 5, and Wednesday, July 6 2016 as public holidays to celebrate the Muslim festival, Eid-el Fitri.

The Minister of Interior, retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau, announced the holiday in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday.

The statement was signed by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Bassey Akpanyung.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stirred up controversy in Abia state by issuing a Certificate of Return of to Uche Ogah, who came second at the Peoples Democratic Party primaries in 2014, following the order by Justice Okon Abang of a Federal High Court in Abuja.

Abang had ordered INEC to immediately issue a Certificate of Return to the plaintiff, Ogah in a tax evasion case filed against Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.

The court held that Ikpeazu submitted false tax information to the party in the run up to the primaries, hence was not qualified to run for the 2015 governorship election.

Lebanese Bureau de Change Operator dupes three Lagos customers out of N137 million

The Lagos State Police command has launched a manhunt for a Lebanese Bureau de Change Operator known as Aly Sayad accused of absconding with $487,000 (about N137 million).

Three businessmen had gone to Sayad’s office on Idowu Taylor Street, Victoria Island on Tuesday and gave him the $487,000 to help them change to Naira.

Sayad, it was learnt, told them to wait for him in his office that he wants to go to the bank to transfer the money to them.

Governor Ikpeazu to INEC: ‘You can’t issue Certificate of Return when there’s a subsisting appeal’

Okezie Ikpeazu has declared that he is still the Governor of Abia state in spite of the fact that the Independent National Electoral Commission has issued a Certificate of Return of to Uche Ogah who came second at the Peoples Democratic Party primaries in 2014.

An Abuja Federal High Court had on Monday, June 27 ruled that Ikpeazu was illegitimately elected as the PDP’s standard bearer, owing to his filing of false tax returns.

Consequently, the court ordered INEC to immediately issue a Certificate of Return to Ogah – which was carried out earlier on Thursday, June 30.

Senate Committee asks Malami’s representative to leave hearing on forgery case, says it summoned the AGF not him

The Senate on Thursday closed the public hearing on the alleged forgery of the Senate Standing Rules after the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami did not show up in person.

Malami was represented by the S.A to President Buhari on Prosecution, Okoi Obono Obla.

Obla who is attached to the Ministry of Justice, was asked to leave the hearing after he told the Senate Committee on Legal Matters, Judiciary & Human Rights led by Senator David Umaru that the AGF is not in the country.

Istanbul Attack: Turkish official says attackers were Russian, Uzbek & Kyrgyz nationals

A Turkish official on Thursday confirmed that the three suspected Islamic State suicide bombers who attacked the Ataturk International Airport, Istanbul were from Russia, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.

The suspects are accused of killing 42 people in a gun and bomb attack at Istanbul airport this week.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in Istanbul, declined to give details because the investigations have not yet been released.

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Monday, Justice Okon Abang, ordered the governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu to immediately vacate his office as he was never qualified to run for the party primaries in the People's Democratic party (PDP) as a guber candidate, on the account of fake tax returns

The judge directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue a certificate of return to Uche Ogah, the opponent of Okezie Ikpeazu, who polled the second highest number of votes in the primary election. The judge also ordered the Chief Judge of the state to swear in Uche Ogah, as the new governor of the state.

Alleged forgery: Senate, Presidency exchange words

 As the controversy surrounding the alleged forgery of the senate standing order by Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy Ike Ekweremadu lingers on, the Senate and the Presidency has been boxing each other publicly.

The Senate has hit back at the Secretary to the Federal Government, David Babachir Lawal for stating that it is only the Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu and two others, that are on trial for forgery at an Abuja High court.

The SGF had cautioned the Senate leadership not to drag the entire National Assembly into their ongoing trial.

The Senate has responded by stating that the trial of Saraki and Ekweremadu for alleged forgery of the standing orders of the house is a mere plot by the executive to create a distraction for the leadership of the senate and force a change of leadership.

Ali Modu-Sheriff's camp denies report he was sacked by FCT Court

Ousted chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff has dismissed the report of his sack by a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, describing the report as “false and a clear misrepresentation of the ruling of the court.”

This was contained in a statement signed by Professor Adewale Oladipo, the factional National Secretary, who said the court delivered its judgement on certain amendments, which have nothing to do with the leadership of Sheriff.

The US government's new proposal to curb terrorism involves snooping around social media accounts of foreign travelers. The new proposal to ask visitors and non-citizens for their “social media identifier”could help border agents “investigate” your background without having to go to the NSA, Customs and Border Protection, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), believes having this “identifier” could help it find “possible nefarious activity and connections.”

According to the Federal Register, if the plan is approved following a public consultation process that ends on August 22, those traveling under either the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) or visa waiver programs under Form I-94W would have the option of answering, “Please enter information associated with your online presence – Provider/Platform – Social media identifier,"

WAEC certificate: Lawyer withdraws suit against Buhari

Abuja based legal practitioner, Nnamdi Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe, has filed a notice at the Federal High Court Abuja withdrawing the suit he filed challenging the authenticity of President Buhari's Cambridge West African School Certificate WASC. 

Nwokocha-Ahaaiwe in the suit alleged that President Buhari did not sit for the Cambridge West African School Certificate WASC) in 1961 as he claimed. The notice for the discontinuance of the suit dated June 27th reads in part ;

Prison break: Officer in Charge of Kuje prison removed

Following the jail break at the Kuje Medium prisons last Friday June 24th in which two inmates escaped, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Prison Service, Ahmed Jafa’aru, has ordered the removal of the officer in-charge of Kuje prison, Musa Tanko, and also instituted a probe panel over the matter. 

The two inmates Maxwell Ajukwu and Solomon Amodu, were standing trial for murder and escaped from the facility by scaling the fence.

They are currently at large.

US Marine Corps replaces “Man” with “Marine” in some of its job titles to ensure Gender Neutrality

The United States Marine Corps has taken out the word “man” in 19 of its job titles, The Washington Post reports.

This follows a directive by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus to make occupational specialties more gender neutral after once-closed combat jobs were opened to women at the start of the year.

In other changes, “antitank missileman” has been renamed “antitank gunner,” and “field artillery operations man” is now “field artillery operations chief.” The other three title changes pertain to positions associated with reconnaissance Marine (formerly reconnaissance man) occupational specialties.

This is coming after Justice Okon Abang of a Federal High Court in Abuja, ordered the Governor to vacate his office after finding him guilty of submitting false information to his party - PDP during the party's governorship primary in December 2014.

Responding to the crowd of Abians who besieged the government house in Umuahia, the Governor, represented by his Deputy, Ude Oko Chukwu, said he will employ all judiciary processes to regain his mandate and expressed confidence that the judiciary will do the right thing.

Court grants ex-Chief of Air Staff, Adesola Amosun N500million bail

Former Chief of Air Staff, Adesola Amosu, who is accused of being involved in a N21 billion fraud while he was office, was arraigned before a Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday and was granted N500 million bail. 

Amosu was arraigned alongside Jacob Adigun, an Air Vice Marshal, and Gbadebo Olugbenga, an Air Commodore on a 26-count of stealing about N50 billion.

They pleaded not guilty to all the charges. The judge afterwards granted them bail in the sum of N500 million each.

Buhari's body guard with link to Boko Haram reportedly arrested

Vanguard report that Aminu had been taken into custody by security operatives for interrogation.

Former Minister of Works, Chief Ojo Maduekwe is dead. He was 71 years old.

Ojo Maduekwe who was born May 6, 1945 in Abia State, was also appointed Foreign Minister of Nigeria on July 26, 2007 by late President Umaru Yar’Adua

Maduekwe was also appointed Culture and Tourism minister by President Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999, Minister of Transport in 2001, before he became Works minister.

Lagos government clarifies incident surrounding street hawker knocked down by truck

    The Lagos State Government has clarified the misconception surrounding the unfortunate incident where a street hawker was knocked down by an oncoming truck at Maryland Bus Stop on Wednesday. The street hawker, who was trying to evade arrest from officials of Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), had attempted to cross the road before being hit by the truck, which was erroneously thought to be a BRT Bus.

As a result, hoodlums armed with sticks and stones, immediately descended on some BRT buses plying the route as at the time of the incident and in the process destroyed several of the BRT buses.

Literary Icon, Elechi Amadi, dies at 82

Educationist, novelist, and dramatist, Elechi Amadi has died. He passed away this afternoon at a hospital in Port Harcourt. He was 82.

The author of the ever green novel 'The Concubine' was born on 12 May, 1934 in Aluu community, Ikwerre local government area of Rivers state.

The River state government have released a statement mourning his passing.

The late literary icon was  among the first generation of African writers and novelists. Some of his works include The Concubine (1966), The Great Ponds (1969), and The Slave (1978).
