Report claims “70% of Nigerian men are depressed due to societal perception”

The Voices for Change (V4C), an NGO, says the organisation’s evaluation report on “Being a Man in Nigeria” indicated that 70 per cent of Nigerian men were depressed due to societal perception.

Patience Ekeoba, Research and Evidence Leader of the organisation, said this at the evaluation land mark research report entitled: Being a Man in Nigeria: Its perception and realities in Abuja on Thursday.

Quoting the report, she said that Nigerian men were perceived in the society to be bold, leaders, bread winners, fearless, intelligent and tough among others.

Boko Haram now use birds as suicide bombers - Army

Major General Lamidi Adeosun, the Commander of a multinational force in the war against Boko Haram has revealed that the insurgents have devised the strategy of strapping bombs to birds.

The Army General said the Boko Haram insurgents have continued to develop more deadly weapons for carrying out their bloody attacks.

The Independent, a United Kingdom newspaper, quoted Adeosun to have stated that the new discovery was made at a meeting with American diplomats and security officials.

Lebanese man charged to court for claiming to be ‘Nigerian citizen by birth’

A 42-year-old Lebanese, Rami El Masri, has been charged to court for allegedly forging a letter of Nigerian citizenship confirmation and also parading himself as a Nigerian.

Masri, who owns two construction companies along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, was on Thursday arraigned before a Lagos State Magistrate’s Court in Igbosere.

The three counts filed against him by the police bordered on conspiracy, forgery and uttering of documents.

4 Fulani herdsmen abduct Delta State University staff

The menace of the rampaging Fulani herdsmen has now spread to Delta state, in the South-South region of Nigeria.

A non-academic staff of the Delta State University in Abraka, John Ogeleke was kidnapped on Thursday, April 21 at Kwale, Ndokwa West Local Government Area in Delta State.

Ogeleke is believed to have been kidnapped by men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.

Transcript of the 911 call made from Prince's home

A transcript of the 911 call from Prince's suburban Minneapolis home has been released by the Police. 

The call was made by a young man inside the home who didn't seem to know the address of the home when the 911 dispatcher asked him for it. Fortunately, another person at the compound eventually gave the correct address to the dispatcher.

The caller first says he has "someone who is unconscious" and then says "the person is dead here" and later, "Yes, it's Prince."

Abia Warriors coach Kennedy Boboye has said he feels honoured to work as assistant coach of the Super Eagles. 

On Wednesday,  the Nigeria Football Federation announced Salisu Tush as the new temporary head coach of the Super Eagles to be assisted by Imama Amapakabo and Kennedy Boboye , and the three coaches will take charge of the Super Eagles’ international friendly matches against Mali and Luxembourg.

Boboye feels his appointment is as a result of his hardwork in the Nigerian Football league especially with Abia Warriors and says he will ensure the Super Eagles play attractive football.

Angry female students protest topless against campus rapes in South African

Protests began on Monday at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa against incessant rape on the campus. Topless female students with 'this is mine scrawled on their breasts' were seen among the protesters demonstrating against the rape culture on a university campus. The police have tried to disperse students using pepper spray and stun guns.

The students started demonstrating after a list of suspected rapists on campus was leaked on social media on Sunday.

Many students, who were raped on campus said they have reported rapes to the university as well as police, but that their complaints have been ignored by campus authorities, the BBC reported.

Late music legend, Prince was found in an elevator at his home | Obama mourns him

According to the Sheriff's department investigating Prince's death, he was found in an elevator at his Paisley Park home in Minnesota. They said they performed CPR, but were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead on the scene. The Sheriff's Office told TMZ that they are now investigating the circumstances of Prince's death but do not suspect any foul play.

The 57 year old singer was epileptic. He had a health scare on his private jet on Friday last week and the next day after leaving the hospital, he had a party and invited strangers to his party and everyone said he seemed fine.

NNPC reacts to reports that Buhari has sacked Ibe Kachikwu as NNPC boss

Contrary to widespread reports, President Muhammadu Buhari has not axed Dr Ibe Kachikwu from his role as the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

Unconfirmed reports inferred on Thursday, that Kachikwu had been replaced with Maikanti Baru – a Group Executive Director of the corporation.

However, Premium Times reached out to a member of the management of the NNPC, who described the reports as ‘completely false’.

Fuel scarcity: "I really feel for the people of Nigeria" - US ambassador to UN, Samantha Power

 The United States ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power has said the US Embassy will assist Nigeria in finding a solution to the persistent fuel scarcity, which has lingered across the country for months.

While speaking with reporters on Thursday during her visit to Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Power said Nigeria would be offered ‘technical advice, counsel and technical assistance’ by the US Embassy.

Buhari returns budget to National Assembly, demands adjustment

The last is yet to be heard about the controversial 2016 budget as President Muhammadu Buhari is reported to have officially returned the bill to the National Assembly, with a demand for adjustment on areas of concern to the presidency.

This was disclosed on Thursday, by the spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Abdurazaq Namdas.

He noted that the grey areas in the budget will be made known to Nigerians soon.

Fire guts 50 shops in Ladipo Auto Spare Parts market

There was a fire outbreak at Ladipo Auto spare parts market, Mushin Lagos at about 2 am yesterday morning which razed about 50 shops to the ground. 

No definite cause for the fire has been ascertained so far. One source told The Nation that the fire was caused by a gas explosion while another source said it was by irregular power supply. The fire reportedly started from the Osoro/Akinwumi area of the market.

A controversial Ugandan professor Dr. Stella Nyanzi of University of Makerere who is famous for her threats and antics during Uganda's general election, stripped naked to protest the decision by Makerere Institute of Social Research to vacate her from the office to make space for a new program. She accused the director Mahmood Mamdani of being a dictator.
"Mahmood Mamdani locked me out of my office, even after the Deputy Vice Chancellor refused him to continue with evicting me. I have found his ugly padlock barring my access to my office. This is the third day"  she wrote on her Facebook page.

Anti-slavery activist Harriet Tubman to replace ex- president Jackson on the US $20 bill

The US Treasury Department announced on Wednesday that Harriet Tubman, an abolitionist who risked her life bringing hundreds of slaves to freedom, will replace President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill, which will make her the first female on a US currency.

Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew confirmed that Hamilton would remain on the $10 bill after an unexpected public show of support fueled, in part, by the popularity of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway play based on Hamilton's life by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

2 students bags 2 months in prison for hawking fuel in Abuja

A male student and his female partner have been sentenced to two months imprisonment, each, by an Abuja Grade 1 Area Court for hawking fuel in a jerry can along Abuja-Kubwa expressway, an act which constitutes an embarrassment to the Government.
According to the prosecutor, a team of police officers apprehended & arrested the accused, bringing them to the police station with 55 litres of fuel in their possession.

Ben Bruce 'rejects' Senate's controversial SUV

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce has denied receiving any SUV from the senate. He denied the claims after a twitter user asked him where he was when some senators discussed the purchase of the SUVs. He directed the user to the senator that represents his constituency in the senate.

People are sending death threats to the tiger who killed a zookeeper

The Malayan tiger that mauled a Florida zookeeper to death  at the Palm Beach Zoo, has received death threats from members of the public.

Stacey Konwiser was killed by the endangered big cat earlier this month while she was working near it. However staff at the zoo shot the tiger with a tranquilizer dart instead of a rifle bullet.

Kaduna government seeks death sentence for 50 Shiite Muslims

Following the brutal clash between the Nigerian army and the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (Shiite sect) in December 2015, the Kaduna State Government, on Thursday, prayed a high court to sentence fifty Shiite Muslims to death over the killing of an army officer.

The state government had preferred a 5-count charge against the Shiite sect members, accusing them of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, culpable homicide, disturbance of public peace and wrongful restrain.

The 50 accused persons are among the 265 people who were arrested after the bloody Shiite/Army clash.

House of Reps member Onyemeachi Mprakpor 'beaten up for overtaking convoy of Prisons boss'

A female member of the Federal House of Representative, Onyemeachi Mprakpor, is alleged to have been beaten up, on Wednesday, by the security officials attached to the Comptroller-General of Prisons, Peter Ezenwa Ekpendu, within the premises of the National Assembly.

This was made known on Thursday by the Minority Leader of the House, Leo Ogor, during the plenary session of the House.

Suspected phone thief beats RRS operative black and blue in Ikeja, Lagos

A 32-year old suspected phone thief, Idowu Nojeem pictured above, has been accused of beating a policeman attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of Lagos State Police Command, black and blue while attempting to rob the operative of his Tecno Y5 handset.

The operative, Sergeant Oladipo Adetumbi, who was on a surveillance mission around Ikeja Under Bridge, made a frantic effort to arrest the suspect in spite of receiving several punches on his face.

81 year old woman raped and robbed by 3 men in Ghana (Photos/video)

An 81 year old woman known as Madam Martha, a resident of New Akrofuom  an Ashanti Region in Ghana, was reportedly robbed and raped by three unknown men in the area. 

The three men broke into her apartment, beat her up, took turns to rape her before they eventually robbed her. The woman is said to have experienced extreme pain and bled profusely after the assault.

27 year old singer, Adele, has been named UK's richest female musician according to the Sunday Times rich List. Within the space of one year, her fortune increased from of £35m to £85m making her the richest UK female artiste and 30th in the UK and Ireland music millionaires list.
The only female singer with a bigger fortune on the list is Irish artiste Enya with £91m..

Boko Haram landmines kill 5 in Yobe, 9 injured

Five farmers weren killed and nine others injured by Boko Haram landmines in Yobe Goniri area of Gujba local government area in Yobe state today April 21st. 

 The residents of the community returned to their homes two weeks ago and were out at their farms, clearing the grasses to beginning their farming season when these landmine explosions happened. 

Court dissolves marriage of 33 years after husband revealed that his wife beats him “almost every day”

Unable to withstand further beatings from his wife of 33 years, E* (surname withheld) , 58, on Wednesday secured a divorce from his wife, (name withheld).

“My wife wants to kill me, she beats me almost every day with dangerous weapons. On three occasions, she broke my leg, preventing me from going out for days. Due to her frequent beating, I got paralysed in 2012 and that made the beating unabated,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quotes the man as pleading.

An Igando Customary Court in Lagos dissolved the marriage, as its president, Adegboyega Omilola said he was convinced that the couple could no longer live together as the petitioner insisted on divorce after several interventions.

7 die as female suicide bombers detonate explosives in Bama IDP camp

Reports from Channels Television‘s Borno State correspondent, Blessing Tunoh say that about seven persons have been killed in a suicide attack in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Banki Town in Bama Local Government Area, Borno State.

According to the report, two female suicide bombers detonated their strapped explosives in the camp at about 7 AM on Wednesday.

Tunoh also said that an unidentified number of persons were injured in the attack.

Ike Ekweremadu reacts to EFCC’s statement that it doesn’t confer honours

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Wednesday dissociated itself from the decoration of the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu as its “Anti Corruption Ambassador” by its National Assembly Liaison officer, Suleiman Bakari, saying it is not in the habit of decorating individuals with titles.

Ekweremadu has reacted to the news in a statement signed by his Media Adviser, Uche Anichukwu, saying that the EFCC’s claim is contradictory. He cited an instance where former EFCC boss Nuhu Ribadu conferred Role Model Award on three individuals, including a former Senate President in 2007.

He also pointed out that the visit and decoration by Bakari were not solicited for in the first place.

The Code of Conduct Tribunal Chairman Justice Danladi Umar has threatened to hold one of Bukola Saraki‘s lawyers in contempt of court.

It began after the Chairman dismissed Saraki’s motion for him to disqualify himself from the case. As he ordered the continuation of the trial, one of Saraki’s lawyers, Raphael Oluyede, stood up to say that Umar should at least listen to the motion. He went to to say that the motion was filed because “there are too many cloudy things about your (Umar) relationship with the EFCC”

‘Don’t distract us with celebrations of our victories’ – Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army has dissociated itself from ‘a number of groups and individuals’ celebrating its recent victories against insurgents of Islamic terrorist sect, Boko Haram.

The Army also advised such persons that such celebrations and solidarity rallies could distract the troops prosecuting the war efforts against Boko Haram.

A statement released by Army spokesperson, Colonel Sani Usman, said: “The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to a number of groups and individuals celebrating the routing out and decimation of Boko Haram terrorists on our soil.”

After Wednesday’s meeting of the NFF Technical Committee which took place at the federation’s secretariat, thhe Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) decided that Shaibu Amodu,  the Technical Director of the NFF, and assistant coach Salisu Yusuf would take charge of the Super Eagles on interim basis.
Yusuf will take charge of the team, while Amodu will supervise, the meeting agreed.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the appointment would see the coaches lead the Eagles to the two international friendly matches against Mali and Luxembourg’s national teams on May 27th and June 1st respectively.
