Fire engulfs 5 star Address Hotel in Dubai (Photos)

A huge fire has broken out in a hotel in Dubai ahead of tonight's New Year's Eve celebrations.

Pictures shared on Twitter shows the Address Downtown Dubai hotel engulfed in flames.
The fire is said to have started on one of the hotel's balconies.They have also said no one was hurt in the blaze.

Ali Al Mutawa, of Dubai's Civil Defence, told 7Days UAE:
'We have controlled 65 per cent of the fire in the hotel and no casualties have been seen so far after evacuating the hotel.'
The fire, which is only on the outside of the building, started on the 20th floor.

Lagos state House of Assembly annuls Femi Pedro’s 2007 impeachment

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday invalidated the impeachment of former Deputy Governor of the state, Femi Pedro.

The resolution followed the adoption of the recommendation of the eight member Ad Hoc Committee constituted on July 2, to review the circumstances that led to impeachment of Pedro.

The House, which passed a vote of confidence on Pedro, said that the allegations of his impeachment were not connected to criminal charges.

The committee, headed by the Majority Leader, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade, in its report said:

A robbery suspect and ex–convict, Wasami Dennis, 32, was arrested by operatives of the RRS in his hideout in Agbole Orile in Lagos. He confessed that it was easier for him to operate in Ghana than Nigeria because Ghanaians are not security conscious like Nigerians. This trans-border robbery suspect hails from Abraka town, Delta State. He was released almost a year ago from Kirikiri prison after he was convicted for a break-in-and-run robbery incidence in Festac, Lagos, Nigeria.
"I was just released from prison about a year ago. I was caught in possession of a stolen laptop from Ghana along with three machetes hidden inside the walls of the hideout," he narrated.

Rwandan pastor sentenced to life imprisonment for genocide crimes

A Rwandan pastor accused of leading and coordinating attacks on minority Tutsis during Rwanda's 1994 genocide has been jailed for life, Rwanda's high court said on Wednesday, December 30.

An estimated 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed by dominant Hutu forces in the genocide in 100 days.

Jean Uwinkindi, 64, who once led the Kayenzi Pentecostal church in the rural outskirts of the capital Kigali, was convicted of crimes of genocide and crimes against humanity committed during the slaughter.

Deadly counterfeit alcoholic drinks flood UK shops ahead of new year festivities

Trading Standards, UK, is warning party goers about counterfeit alcohol containing lethal chemicals that can cause vomiting and in some cases, death. Drinks containing toxins including chloroform, anti-freeze and ethyl acetate have been found in counterfeit bottles of alcohol across the country, Trading Standards has warned.

The drinks often mimic branded products and other tell tale signs include spelling errors, a key warning sign of fake vodka is that it smells like nail varnish. Hundreds of thousands of litres of counterfeit products were seized in the run-up to Christmas in a battle to quash the billion-pound bootleg alcohol industry.

South African king sentenced to 12yrs in prison for cruelty towards his subjects

South African king Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo has been sentenced to 12-years in prison for arson, kidnap and assault of his subjects. King Dalindyebo handed himself over to the Mthatha Correctional Center in Eastern Cape province minutes before midnight on Wednesday, December 30, after failing in an 11th-hour bid to evade incarceration by seeking a retrial or a presidential pardon.

In a statement, Justice spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said:
"We confirm that King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo handed himself to the head of Mthatha Corresctional Centre at 23h40 in the presence of the Regional Commissionerof the Eastern Cape"

Saraki denies claims by Buhari that the Senate plans to spend N47bn on cars

Senate President Bukola Saraki has denied the allegations by President Buhari that the upper chamber is planning to spend N47 billion for car purchase. 
Buhari made the statement during his media chat yesterday.
The Senate President also said details of the 2016 budget would be made available to the public.

Abia state: Court of Appeal annul the election Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, declares Alex Otti winner

Alex Otti, candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance in the Abia State Governorship election has been declared the Governor-elect by the Court of Appeal.

The court ruled on Thursday that incumbent Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party, to vacate the office.

The swearing-in of Otti was also ordered by the Appeal Court.

Court of Appeal upholds election of Governor Ishaku of Taraba state

Aisha Alhassan, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Taraba state governorship election, has lost her bid to replace Darius Ishaku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as governor of the state.

On Thursday, the appeal court sitting in Abuja ruled that the Alhassan had no locus standi – the right or capacity to appear in a court – to question the decision of the PDP.

The Abdul Aboki-led five-man panel ruled that the PDP fielded Ishaku and he was accepted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), with no complaints.

Female suicide bombers now attack after asking water for ablution, defence chief warns Nigerians

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin, has warned that female suicide bombers have deployed a new tactic to carry out their nefarious activity. 

Speaking at the end of year conference with principal staff officers of the Defence Headquarters yesterday Dec. 30th, Olonisakin said that female bombers now get easy access to people's homes by requesting for water to perform ablution.

Soon after receiving the water, they detonate the bombs strapped under their hijabs, killing and destroying lives and properties. He called on Nigerians to be very careful when attending to females asking for water for ablution or any other favours.

Nnamdi Kanu's alleged handwritten statement / transcription apologizing to Buhari, Jonathan, Igbo leaders

Shiite sect leader, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky ‘not in Kaduna Prisons’

Contrary to what is being circulated in certain media platforms, the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Ibraheemm El-Zakzaky, may not be in Kaduna Prisons.

El-Zakzaky was arrested after the December 12-13 clash between the Shiite sect and the Nigerian Army. He was subsequently transferred to the custody of the Nigerian Police.

Controller of the Kaduna Prisons, Abubakar Argungu, has denied that El-Zakazaky, was imprisoned in the facility.

3 Nigeria men arrested in India for allegedly gang raping teen girl

Three Nigerian men have been arrested by Indian police for allegedly gang raping a 19 year old Indian girl in West Delhi's Uttam Nagar area. The three alleged rapists are pictured sitting on the ground in the pic above and surrounded by police...
According to India police, the men were arrested on Dec. 29th after getting a statement from the victim, who claimed she was lured into the home of one of the men.

NDLEA arrests female drug trafficker recruited via Facebook

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested 37-year-old Uju Gloria Ezeabata pictured left, with 1.325kg of methamphetamine at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos. 

According to a report by The Nation, investigations by the anti-drug agency showed that Uju, who was recruited on facebook, was taking the drug to Malaysia. The cartel’s suspected leader, Philip Maduabuchi Akpaka, 39, was also arrested.

Beauty queen who faked cancer pleads not guilty to scam

A beauty queen who shaved her head to con friends and family into believing she was battling cancer has denied pocketing thousands from the scam.

Ex-Miss Pennsylvania International US, Brandi Lee Weaver-Gates, pretended she had chronic lymphocytic leukemia in March 2013.

The 23-year-old is accused of pocketing cash from fundraisers organised by her loved ones to pay for her fake treatment, the last of which raised $14,000 (£8,948).

Following her arrest, Weaver-Gates was charged with felony counts of theft by deception and receiving stolen property.

Smart rape victim forced to call boyfriend, calls 911 instead

Police say quick thinking by the victim of a frightening abduction and assault helped them catch her attacker in the act.

The attack happened early Monday in the back of an adult entertainment store.

Officers say Robert Giles, 27, asked the victim to call her boyfriend so he could hear the assault.

Instead of calling her boyfriend, she called 911. Police say the savvy 911 operator also kept his wits about him and played along unbeknownst to the attacker.

OPEC says a $10 trillion investment is needed to prevent a massive spike in oil prices

OPEC says that $10 trillion worth of investment will need to flow into oil and gas through 2040 in order to meet the world’s energy needs.

The OPEC published its World Oil Outlook 2015 (WOO) in late December, which struck a much more pessimistic note on the state of oil markets than in the past. On the one hand, OPEC does not see oil prices returning to triple-digit territory within the next 25 years, a strikingly bearish conclusion. The group expects oil prices to rise by an average of about $5 per year over the course of this decade, only reaching $80 per barrel in 2020. From there, it sees oil prices rising slowly, hitting $95 per barrel in 2040.

Real Madrid star, Cristiano Ronaldo allegedly left his five-year-old son Cristiano Jr with his mum Dolores in Portugal so he could travel to Miami,  Florida, to deal with arrangements for a sibling for his son, a popular Portuguese TV presenter claimed.

Lorry crashes into Police checkpoint in Anambra killing 2 policemen and a civilian

A mobile policeman was on Tuesday evening killed when a tipper driver allegedly lost control of his lorry as a result of brake failure and crashed into a police checkpoint at New Tarzan Junction, along Enugu/Onitsha Expressway in Anambra State

Divisional Police Officer at Ogidi, Hassan Musa, confirmed to newsmen yesterday that a policeman lost his life due to the accident, while two others were hospitalized, adding that the driver has been arrested.

According to reports, the driver lost control as he descended the hill towards the police checkpoint, and crashed into another lorry carrying a container  that fell on the policemen.
