Nigerian woman dies in fire outbreak in Saudi Arabia

An unidentified Nigerian woman, three Canadians and a Pakistani are among at least 10 people that lost their lives in a fire outbreak that engulfed parts of a residential compound rented by oil giant Saudi Aramco, in Saudia Arabia yesterday August 30th. According to a statement the Saudi Arabian government, 10 people died while 259 were injured.

 A preliminary investigation suggests a short circuit in an electrical transformer in the building's basement sparked the blaze which quickly spread through 130 cars parked in the basement.

Nigeria first IVF baby gets admission into European University to study medicine

Nigeria’s first IVF baby, Hannatu Kupchi has gotten admission into a Hungarian university to study medicine. 

Hannatu, who was born at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja on February 11, 1998, says she wants to pursue a degree in medicine so she can also help married couple have their own children.

Hannatu's parents waited 13 years for a child before going the IVF route.

3 dead, 20 wounded as pro-Biafra group, security agents clash in Anambra

Three persons were feared dead and about twenty others wounded on Sunday when members of a new pro- Biafra group, the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) and security operatives engaged in a shootout in Onitsha.

It was not clear what caused the trouble, but one of the injured persons, Mr. Chinwendu Ikechukwu said the group was carrying out an evangelism programme on the need for people to embrace Biafra Republic in parts of Nkpor , Idemili North local government area after their routine meeting, adding that it was while they were on the street that security operatives opened fire on them.

Buhari’s appointments not based on tribe, religion – SGF Babachir Lawal

 The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, says the recent appointments made by President Muhammadu Buhari were not based on their tribes or religion.

President Buhari’s appointment of Lawal and five others, has been widely criticised for overtly favouring the northern region.

Five out of the six appointees were picked from the North while one is from the South.

Fayose says Buhari has turned into a northern President

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of turning himself into a president of Northern Nigeria.

According to Fayose, the appointments made by President Buhari has showed an agenda for a deliberate Nothernisation of Nigeria.

He said it was wrong for the President to have made 31 major appointments and only seven were from the South while 24 were from the North.

Shell Oil workers fired after video of them having sex is found by man's angry wife

Two oil workers have been sacked after a video of them having sex in a hotel room was shared online. Lee Hanlon, 32, and Amy Maxwell, 33, who are both married and met while working for Shell, recorded their illicit encounter on his mobile phone.
The film was discovered by Mr Hanlon’s wife Charon, who sent it to all his contacts including friends, workmates and bosses in an act of revenge. But the footage then ‘spread like wildfire’ as more people passed it on in messages and emails.

Nigeria's Basketball team, D'Tigers win first continental title, qualifies for Olympics (Photos)

Nigeria basketball team, D'Tigers won its first continental title at the 2015 African Basketball Championship which held in Tunisia yesterday August 30th. The basketball team beat defending champions Angola by 74 points to 65.

Their victory at yesterday's match gave them automatic qualification to participate in the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Brazil.

The event was held on Monday, August 31, at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Former governor, Akpabio in road crash, lands in National Hospital, Abuja

Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, who is currently the Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, was involved in a road accident in the early hours of Monday on his way to the Airport to catch an international flight, Punch reports.

According to the report, his car ran into a convoy of a foreign envoy whose identity had not been determined as of the time of filing this report.

It was not clear whether it was Akpabio’s driver or the driver of the Ambassador’s pilot car that beat the traffic light, which led to the accident.

Rwandan pastor forces all members of his congregation to convert to Islam (Photos)

On Tuesday, August 25, a Rwandan pastor, Salim Mikdad, conducted what is arguably the largest conversion of Christians to Islam after he successfully got all 480 members of his congregation to switch faiths, Africa Metro reports.
One of the church members revealed that they all turned up for a church service only to be forced to convert to Islam by their pastor. Mikdad also got the church converted into a mosque during the conversion ceremony. It is reported that an Islamic cleric had preached to Pastor Mikdad and succeeded in converting him to Islam.

Pakistan, India disagree over Nigerian students detained for allegedly trying to join ISIS

The Pakistani and Indian High Commissioners to Nigeria have disagreed over reports that the two Nigerian students that were arrested in India are on their way to join the terrorist group, Islamic State of Syria and Iraq.

While the Indian High Commissioner, Ajjampur Ghanashyam, insisted that the two youths from Kano, Imran Kabeer and Sani Jamiliu, were on their way to Pakistan to join ISIS, his Pakistani counterpart, Lt. Gen. Agha Farooq (retd.), described the report as false.

Farooq stated that India was being mischievous, noting that the students could not possibly breach the Indian/Pakistani borders which he said was fortified with armed soldiers, underground mines and electrified barbed wire.

UNIPORT students protest after one of their classmates dies over school's negligence

2nd year student of Theatre and Film department, University of Port Harcourt, simply known as Kel, collapsed while having a bath around 5am yesterday and was rushed to the emergency unit of the school's Teaching Hospital.

According to her friend, the University of Port harcourt Teaching Hospital rejected her, saying there was no bed space. She was then rushed to a private hospital that referred her back to UPTH. But unfortunately, she died before getting there.

IGP Arase cuts number of Policemen attached to Governors from 150 to 62

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is tackling the challenge of inadequate personnel in policing the country by reducing the number of men and officers deployed to each of the state governors from 150 to 62.

According to Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase, the police force needs to quickly beef up its 305,000 personnel, a number he said was insufficient to police the country, especially in the face of current security challenges.

EFCC sets up 4 member panel to probe Diezani

Investigation has began by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, into the activities of the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

Punch Newspapers reports that a four-member committee of crack detectives, constituted a commission to probe all the accounts of the NNPC, which were supervised by the former minister.

It is believed that the commission is led by a Superintendent of Police, while the other three members of the committee were pioneer civilian operatives of the commission with high capacity for investigation.

Dasuki charged to court over alleged arms possession

Former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), will be arraigned before a Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, for allegedly being in possession of firearms without license.

A statement released by the Department of State Security Service by Tony Opuiyo, on August 24, 2015, said that the agency had charged Dasuki to court.

DSS arrests Boko Haram insurgents in Lagos, Enugu, Plateau and Gombe

The Department of State Services says it has arrested 20 suspected Boko Haram commanders in Lagos, Kano, Enugu, Plateau and Gombe states.

According to the agency, the suspects were arrested between July 8 and August 25, 2015.

Among the suspects are the masterminds of the suicide attacks in Potiskum, Kano, Zaria, and Jos.

“Yoruba regrets voting Buhari… Tinubu is not truthful” – Afenifere leader

Senator Femi Okunrounmu, a leader of the Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, says the Yorubas have started regretting voting for President Muhammadu Buhari.

Okunrounmu, who supported former President Goodluck Jonathan for a second term, said on Saturday, that before the presidential election, the North was looking for an opportunity to return to power while the South-West were the ones behind real change

The Afenifere leader also took a swipe at Bola Tinubu, national leader of the APC, whom he said was not the right leader of the Yoruba people.

Vigilantes uncover strip club for underage girls in Asaba, Delta state

A joint where female teenagers dance naked was discovered by an Asaba-based vigilante group and the operator of the joint arrested last week Thursday.

The joint, located in Asaba, hosts bizarre activities, including pornographic shows, especially at weekends.
During weekends, the joint was filled to capacity with teenage girls during nightfall who offer sex for money. According to sources, the girls came from neighbouring states and wooed men for sex in rooms provided for the purpose.

According to reports, popular Vanguard newspaper columnist and broadcaster, Donu Kogbara, was kidnapped from her home in the Nkpogu area of Port Harcourt early Sunday morning, August 30 by unknown gunmen who drove in a CRV SUV.

The reason for her kidnap is still unknown and no ransom has been demanded for her release by her abductors.

Church members chase pastor from church for allegedly impregnating his maid

There was commotion on Sunday at the United Methodist Church, Mafoluku, in the Oshodi area of Lagos as members of the church chased away their pastor for allegedly impregnating his housemaid.

It was learnt that the pastor, Barkuma Andrew, was stopped from leading the church seven months ago when the housemaid, who was also a member of the church, Grace, had complications after aborting the pregnancy.

Andrew had lived with his wife, children, wife’s cousin, Favour, and Grace in a three-bedroomed flat on the church premises before the incident.

Kenya finishes on top for the first time at the IAAF World Championship in Beijing

History was made yesterday, August 30 when Kenya topped the world at the 15th IAAF World Athletics Championships in Beijing with 7 Gold, 6 Silver and 3 Bronze. 26-year-old Asbel Kiprop crossed the line in 3:34.40. to win the Men's 1500m gold medal which ensured Kenya finished top.
Jamaica finished second overall with 7 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze to make a total of 12 medals while United States of America came third with 5 gold, 6 silver and 6 bronze to sum up the best top three with 18 medals in total.

Boko Haram strikes, kills 68 people in Borno village

 Islamic extremist group Boko Haram killed 56 villagers in a remote area, the governor of Borno State of the region said, as the government warned that the extremists are trying to extend their violent campaign.

Gov. Kashim Shettima confirmed the attack in Baanu village during a meeting with the parents of the 219 girls abducted from a school in the region by the extremists last year. Thursday marked 500 days of captivity of the girls from a school in Chibok.

Wike to Amaechi: “This is not a media trial, go and defend yourself”

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has advised his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi, to go and defend himself at the judicial commission of inquiry.

Amaechi had on Saturday said he would not appear before the Justice George Omereji panel of inquiry.

Reacting to this, Wike said it was wrong for Amaechi to describe the commission as illegal even when the court had ruled that the panel was in order.
